Two Mighty Oaks Named to All-Region 19 Team

NJCAA Region 19 announced their All-Region teams this week, which highlights standout players for the spring 2021 season within Region 19. Salem’s Jailson Filho (Lauro de Freitas-BA, Brazil / SESI Djalma Pessoa) and Matheus Chamusca (Salvador, Brazil / Sarte Coc) were awarded the honor of being named to the first team and second team, respectively.

“I am very proud of this accomplishment, but the whole team deserves credit. I have to thank Coach [Matt Murray] for helping with the off-field issues like schoolwork so I could focus on the soccer.” Jailson said when asked to reflect on what he would attribute his success to. “My hope is that receiving this honor will allow us to recruit more players for next season and play in nationals.”

Chamusca also believes the whole team deserves credit because it's all of them playing out there, not just one player.

“The whole team deserves this credit because we are all playing out there. There were games where we played without subs and we made it through. I would like to thank Coach [Matt Murray] for showing us how to be successful on and off the field.” said Chamusca.

This season for the Salem Community College men’s soccer program was the first time Salem has fielded a men’s soccer team in nine years. Head coach Matt Murray’s team finished with a 2-6 record scoring a total of 14 goals and both Filho and Chamusca were important to the Mighty Oaks this season according to Murray.

“Jailson [Filho] is one of the hardest working players that I've ever coached.  He is a grinder, tirelessly doing the dirty work in a match that often goes unnoticed.  This honor is well deserved! [Matheus] Chamusca is the backbone of our team.  His extremely high soccer IQ paired with his prototypical center back build, is a perfect combination making him every coach's dream to anchor a squad” said Murray.

Filho and Chamusca both look to return to Salem next year under the direction of Head Coach Matt Murray with their eyes set on the goal of playing in nationals.
