SCC Names Mike Green to Lead Men’s Basketball

Carneys Point, NJ.- Salem Community College has named former NCAA Division I standout and professional basketball player Mike Green as head coach of the Mighty Oaks men's basketball team.

Green succeeds A.J. Williams, who recently resigned for personal reasons. A Philadelphia native, Green graduated from Franklin Learning Center, where he was a two-time, All-Philadelphia Public League player.

Green continued his basketball career at Towson University and Butler University. A two-year starter for Butler, Green was 2007-08 Horizon League Player of the Year, Most Outstanding Player of the 2008 Horizon League Tournament and 2007-08 Horizon League All-Defensive Team. After earning his degree in sociology, he played professionally overseas for 12 years. Since 2021, he was director of player development for the Penn State men's basketball team in State College.

"We're excited to have Mike Green join our staff as head men's basketball coach," said Director of Athletics Dr. Robert D. Bunnell. "His career as a NCAA Division I basketball player, professional player for over a decade, and collegiate coach make him exceptionally well-prepared to take on this challenge.

"I am impressed by Mike's humility, excitement about this opportunity, and his sincere desire to work with young men to help them develop personally through participation in collegiate athletics," continued Bunnell. "I look forward to working with Coach Green and his assistants, and am confident that they will be able to make a difference with our program and the young men in it."

Green follows Williams, who guided the men's team since its rebirth in 2019. The Mighty Oaks qualified for the Region 19 tournament in 2021-22, the second full season after the program was resurrected. The team finished 18-10, advancing to the second round.

"I thank A.J. for his hard work and efforts in bringing men's basketball back to SCC after a five-year absence," said Bunnell. "A.J. made the program competitive from the start. We appreciate all that A.J. has done for the Mighty Oaks athletics program, and wish him all the best in the next phase of his career."

Green will make his home coaching debut against Rowan College of South Jersey – Cumberland on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. in the DuPont Field House, Davidow Hall, 460 Hollywood Ave., Carneys Point. Admission is free to all Mighty Oaks' games.
