Mighty Oaks Remain Undefeated at Home

Salem hosted the Atlantic Cape Community College Buccaneers today, April 19, at the Carneys Point Recreation Complex. The Mighty Oaks remain undefeated at home as they earn their fifth consecutive win in Carneys Point, NJ after beating the Buccaneers, 4-3.

The last time these two teams met was back on March 26 for a doubleheader at Atlantic Cape, where the Buccaneers took both games by scores of 12-3 and 11-9.

Atlantic Cape was the first on the board with a run in the top of the second inning, but the Mighty Oaks answered back immediately by scoring all four of their runs in the bottom of the inning. Jake Roberts (Hilton Head, SC / Hilton Head HS) brought in first baseman Ryan Dipper (Woodbury Heights, NJ / Gateway HS) with a single for the tying run, then Tucker Dorrity (Ocala, Fl / Fayette County HS) singled to drive in Nick Davis (Middletown, DE / Appoquinimink HS) for with the go-ahead run. Roberts furthered the Mighty Oaks lead as he took advantage of one of five errors in this inning to cross home plate before Drew Tongue (Glassboro, NJ / Glassboro HS) drove in Dorrity for the eventual game winning run. The Buccaneers scored one more run before their comeback in ninth came up short as they only scored one run, giving the Mighty Oaks a 4-3 win, stretching their home winning streak to five games.

Trey Matthews (Newark, DE / Newark Charter School) started on the mound for Salem and earned his second win for the Mighty Oaks, giving up just four singles, while striking out nine of the 31 batters he faced in seven innings. Sean Broadhurst (Deptford, NJ / Deptford Township HS) received a save as he relieved Matthews in the eighth inning and closed out the game for the Mighty Oaks with only 17 pitches, allowing a run on two hits.

The Mighty Oaks will next be in action on Friday, April 23, at 3:30PM when they host the Rowan College of South Jersey- Gloucester Roadrunners.
