Mighty Oaks Fall to CC Of Philadelphia In Region 19 Tournament, 73-57
Philadelphia, Pa. – The Salem Community College men's basketball team concluded their season, taking on the Community College of Philadelphia in the second round of the Region 19 Tournament. The Mighty Oaks were unable to advance, falling to the Lions 74-57. With the loss, the Mighty Oaks historic season comes to an end.
The first half was truly a back and forth battle with the lead changing hands several times. Salem went into the half with a 29-25 lead going into the locker room. The Mighty Oaks got off to a fast start in the second half taking a 37-29 lead. Philly withstood the Salem charge and bounced back tying the game with less than fifteen minutes left in the game. The Lions then went on a run and never looked back.
On the night three Salem player scored 12 points. Freshman guard Chris Evans, freshman forward Myles Haynes and freshman guard Antonio Campbell all registered 12 on the night. Logan Cook added nine from outside the arc while Eric Neal contributed eight.
The season was truly a historic one for the Mighty Oaks. Not only did the team qualify for the Region 19 tournament, they picked up the first post-season victory of any team since the resurrection of the athletic programs at Salem Community College. Several players had great years. Some we have to say good-bye to but others leave us with much to be excited for moving into next season. Sophomore guard and Captain Eric Neal had a fine season averaging 14.4 points per game with 4.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Paris Hickman, a sophomore guard, shared in the team lead with 14.6 points per game. Freshman forward Myles Haynes also averaged 14.6 points per game to share the team lead. Haynes had a steller freshman campaign adding a team high 8.8 rebounds per game while earning a Garden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week nod. Freshman guard Antonio Campbell, had a solid season adding 9.9 points per game.
The Mighty Oaks will look to build upon their best season in the new era of Salem Community College athletics, looking to make a strong run at next year's conference championship.
