Mighty Oaks Historic Victory Over Atlantic Cape

The Mighty Oaks have been due for a win this season, competing hard and hanging with tough opponents game after game. In Thursday night's game against the Atlantic Cape Buccaneers, the Oaks came out storng, leading in the first half, ending the first half with a 10-2 run. The score at the end of the first 20 minutes left Salem in the lead 55-39.

The Mighty Oaks continued their strong play, with another run of 16-4, putting the game out of reach, defeating the Buccaneers by a 96-78 final score. Lamar Woody led all five Mighty Oaks starters in double figures, with 34 points. Maurice Freeman followed him with 25 points, and his teammates Robert Whitaker (14), Stephon Fauntroy (13), and Eric Neal (10) each collected double digits. Marcus Franklin led Atlantic Cape with 25 points, and Ayshion Centeno chipped in with 24 for the Buccaneers. 

The Mighty Oaks make history, clinching their first win at Atlantic Cape! The men's basketball team collected the first team sport victory since return of athletics, with Coach AJ Williams also earning his first win as a college head coach. Williams said, "I am really proud of the way our guys prepared and executed against a solid team on the road. They deserved this. We had five guys in double figures and played really good team basketball for 40 minutes. We've been competing in every game and were due to pull one out. I think this win gives our guys the confidence they need to be able to finish games. We're going to keep preparing and getting better everyday to keep putting ourselves in this position." Assistant Coach Corey Frizzera shared in the excitement saying, "I'm so proud of the way we competed and responded in a tough environment with only six guys. We pulled out our first win and hope to build off this as we look towards Bergen on Saturday. Coach AJ and I believe in our guys and we're ready to continue to chop wood everyday!"

With the victory, the Mighty Oak's record to 1-7 in their conference, and 1-9 overall. Atlanitc Cape drops to 3-5 overall, and 3-4 in the GSAC.

With three games remaining on the first semester schedule, The Mighty oaks are in action again Saturday, December 7th, at Bergen County College. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 noon.
