Mighty Oaks Take One Of Three Against Third Ranked RCSJ-Cumberland

Carneys Point, NJ – The Salem Community College baseball team was able to win one out of three games in this weekend's Region 19 series against the NJCAA Division 3 third ranked RCSJ-Cumberland. The Mighty Oaks split the Saturday doubleheader, only to drop the third game on a frigid Sunday afternoon.

Game One

The Mighty Oaks were led on the mound once again by Joe Davis, who for the second consecutive start pitched a complete game to earn the victory.  The Mighty Oaks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Davis held the Dukes offense in check allowing just one run on the day and striking out seven.  The Salem offense erupted six runs in the sixth inning.  At the plate SCC was led by Ryan Dipper who was 3 for 4 on the day with a home run and 3 RBI, while Jake Roberts went 2 for 2 , with 2 walks and a 2 run home run.  The Mighty Oaks added two more runs in the seventh inning to secure the 9-1 win.

Game Two

The nightcap was a pitcher's duel that saw Ray Knappenberger go the distance for the Mighty Oaks. Knappenberger went six innings allowing one earned run striking out five Dukes.  Salem couldn't quite get the offense going but scored three runs in the seventh and dropped game two 5-3.

 

Game Three

The finale of the series took place on a very frigid Sunday that saw the Mighty Oaks drop a close game 7-4. Sean Cocuzza got the start for SCC, going five and two-thirds innings. Vonzel Rivera and Frank Kopaczewski we strong out of the bullpen finishing the game and shutting down the Dukes offense. At the plate the Mighty Oaks were led by Nick Toms and Phil Sedalis who each had two hits on the game. 

Salem moves to 10-15 overall on the season and 4-6 in Region 10.  The Mighty Oaks are back in action when they will host Montgomery County Community College Tuesday March 29 at the Carneys Point Recreation Park with the first pitch at 3:30.
