Salem Sweeps Sussex in Return Home

Salem Sweeps Sussex in Return Home

Salem returned home for the first time since spring of 2014, when the athletics programs were cut from Salem Community College, to host the Sussex County Community College Skylanders. The Mighty Oaks won game one, 9-2, and completed the sweep with a 7-5 win in game two.

The Mighty Oaks had an explosive start to game one with a lead-off triple by Ahmad Edwards (Metter, GA / Tattnall HS), who was brought in by Nick Toms (Pennsville, NJ / Pennsville HS) on the next at bat for Salem's first run of the game. By the end of the first inning, Salem was up 4-0 on the Skylanders. In the second inning, Toms scored his second run of the game thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jacob Roberts (Hilton Head, SC / Hilton Head HS) to extend the Mighty Oaks lead to 5-0. In the third, Sussex scored their first run of the game, but Salem answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third to further the lead to 8-1. Toms in the sixth inning scored his third run of the game to seal the 9-2 victory for the Mighty Oaks in game one. Patrick Montagna (Pennsville, NJ / Pennsville Memorial High School) started, and finished, the game allowing only two runs on eight hits.

Game two started off differently than game one with the first inning seeing only two total hits. In the bottom of the second, Salem took their first lead of the game thanks to two consecutive sacrifices by Ethan Gill (Mickelton, NJ / Kingsway HS) and Drew Tongue (Glassboro, NJ / Glassboro HS), respectively, which scored Ryan Dipper (Woodbury Heights, NJ / Gateway HS) and put Phil Sedalis (Wenonah, NJ / Deptford Township HS) on third, who was batted-in by Tucker Dorrity (Ocala, Fl / Fayette County HS). Sussex through the next four innings scored five uncontested runs to take a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Salem answered back with five runs of their own with Ahmad Edwards, Dipper, Sedalis, Gill and Tongue scoring to put Salem ahead, 7-5, and ultimately completed the sweep.  Sean Broadhurst (Deptford, NJ / Deptford Township HS) receives credit for the win after allowing only one hit in two innings pitched in relief of starter Trey Matthews (Newark, DE / Newark Charter School).

The Mighty Oaks will next be in action Wednesday, March 31, when they travel to Rowan College of South Jersey-Cumberland for a single game starting at 3:30PM.
